As generations come of age, they find themselves wondering what traditions they can begin with their little ones. I think the Christmas nostalgia hits us all every year and we crave to go back to past Christmas years to find that magical feeling the holidays bring.
Being able to create memories and instill traditions in your family is so important if you're trying to create a childhood like you had growing up. One way to do that is through DIY crafts. Making an ornament every year with your kids could be something special. When they come to grow up and be the age you are now, they'll look back on the ornaments and want to replicate the feelings they had when making them.
If you'd like to start this ornament tradition, look below for a Salt Dough Ornament recipe!
Items Needed:
Measuring Cups
Large Spoon
Mixing Bowl
Parchment Paper
Rolling Pin
Cookie Sheet
Cookie Cutters
Toothpicks
Ribbon
Ingredients:
1 Cup Table Salt
4 Cups of All-Purpose Flour
1 1/2 Cups of Warm Water
Step-By-Step Instructions:
Measure out the flour and salt.
Add to a mixing bowl and stir together.
Slowly stream the water into the mix until it comes together.
Finsh mixing together with your hands and knead until the dough is soft. (Takes about 5 minutes)
Preheat the oven to 300° F.
Place the dough between two large piece of parchment paper.
Roll out until it is 1/8" thick.
Remove the top sheet of paper and use cookie cutters to cut the shape of the ornament out.
Peel away any excess dough and if you'd like to add your little ones hand or foot print, imprint them before you transfer them over!
Transfer the paper to the baking sheet.
Using a toothpick, poke a hole large enough for a ribbon to be attached.
Once the oven preheats, bake the ornaments for 1 hour or until they are hard.
Once they are cooled, you can leave as is or you could add paint/glitter/etc to decorate them.
When they are finished, spray polyurethane spray on them and thread the ribbon through.
Hang on your tree to enjoy!
