The Great Unpack: 10 Types of Unpacking Personalities When Moving Into a New Home
Moving into a new home is exciting, but there are ENDLESS boxes to unpack. How you tackle that mountain of cardboard can reveal a lot about your personality. From the hyper-organized to the "live out of box" minimalist, everyone approaches unpacking a little differently.
Which one are you? Read on to discover the 10 types of unpackers we've all encountered (or been ourselves!).
1. The Room-By-Room Strategist
This unpacker has a plan! They've likely labeled the boxes meticulously and will not move to another room without every utensil being put in it's respective drawer. Their goal is to get the most functional rooms in working order ASAP.
Pros: Highly Organized/Minimal Chaos
Cons: Might Be Slow/ Neglect Immediate Needs In Other Rooms
2. The Essentialist (AKA The Survivalist)
This person prioritizes the absolute necessitities: coffee maker, toiletries, change of clothes, bedding. Everything else can wait and they are masters of living comfortably among the chaos.
Pros: Immediate Comfort/No Stress About The Big Picture
Cons: Remaining Boxes May Linger Longer
3. The "Just Open Everything" Overwhelmed
That mountain of boxes we talked about? This person has thrown caution to the wind and unboxed EVERYTHING. They've opened at random, scattered contents, and they've become surrounded by they're stuff.
Pros: You EVENTUALLY Find Things
Cons: Extreme Chaos/Issue Finding Issues/High Risk Of Being Buried Alive
4. The Decorator First
For them, a house isn't a home until the artwork is hung, the throws are draped just right and the plants are in their resting spots. Functional items? Those can wait until the home is cozy.
Pros: Instant Gratification/Beautiful Space
Cons: Might Be Eating Off Paper Plates While Staring At That Gallery Wall
5. The "Recycle As You Go" Minimalist
They question every item, boxes are emptied directly into donation piles/trash/or organized cupboards. Their aim is not to clutter their home right away.
Pros: Efficient Decluttering/Ends Up Tidy And Curated
Cons: Can Be Slow & Emotionally Draining
6. The Weekend Warrior
This unpacker saves their energy for concentrated bursts. They might ignore boxes all week, then go their entire Saturday unpacking. They are 100% fueled by coffee and/or energy drinks.
Pros: Get A Lot Done In Short Period/Enjoy Weeknights Box-Free
Cons: Exhausting Weekends/Potential Burnout
7. The ADHD Type
This person is one who opens a box of old photos and spends an hour thinking about their senior prom. Unpacking becomes an archaeological dig into their past.
Pros: Fun Trips Down Memory Lane/Finding Forgotten Treasures
Cons: Unpacking Takes Forever/Very Little Progress
8. The "Just The Kitchen & Bedroom, Thanks" Specialist
This unpacker quickly gets their kitchen functional for food and coffee, and the bedroom ready for sleeping. The rest of the house? It becomes a cardboard labrinth for weeks.
Pros: Immediate Comfort
Cons: Living Room Might Double As Storage
9. The Unbox & Find Tornado
This brave, brave person dumps everything out onto a large surface, creates piles, and then sorts through everything. It gets 100 times worse before getting better.
Pros: Ensures Nothing Is Forgotten
Cons: Extreme Mess, High Chance Of Tripping
10. The "Hire A Pro" Smarty Pants
This individual must know their limits. Instead of stressing, they get a team to unpack and organize everything. (This one might have more funds than most and alot of trust in the movers!)
Pros: No Stress/Instant Gratification/Perfectly Organized Home
Cons: Most Expensive Option/Might Not Be Able To Locate Your Favorite Cooking Dish For Months
